Don't be afraid
The words “Don’t be afraid, just believe” come from one of the most emotional moments in Jesus’ ministry. In Mark 5, a synagogue leader named Jairus came to Jesus desperate for help. His twelve-year-old daughter was dying. Falling at Jesus’ feet, Jairus pleaded with Him to come and heal her at his house.
Jesus agreed and began making His way to the house. But before they arrived, messengers came with devastating news: “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher anymore?”
For Jairus, his fear had just become reality. The situation was no longer urgent, but seemingly hopeless. But Jesus instead immediately turned to him and said: “Don’t be afraid, just believe.” (Mark 5:36)
Notice what Jesus didn't say. He didn't explain everything. He didn't tell Jairus to understand the situation. He simply called him to trust. When they arrived at the house, Jesus took the girl's hand and said, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” Instantly, she stood up and began to walk.
Jesus isn't limited by the situations that terrify us. He's isn't intimidated by bad news, impossible circumstances, closed doors, or even death itself. The same voice that spoke peace to Jairus, still speaks to us today. It meets us when fear says it's over, when circumstances say there's no hope left, and when we can't see how God is working. In all of it, our call remains the same as it was to Jairus: “Don't be afraid, just believe.”
Sometimes that's all we need to hear.
